Producer
When Claudio Fenocchio succeeded his father Giacomo at the helm of the family business in 1989, the debate between modernist and traditionalists in Barolo was at its most acute. He decided to opt for a third approach, something we can call radical traditionalism. His wines were celebrated for being impressively approachable in youth while getting even better with age. Claudio represents the 5th generation of the Fenocchio family crafting elegant, true Barolos that capture the soul of his vineyards. Far from resting on his laurels though, he continues to push boundaries of quality and innovation while respecting his family legacy.
Viticulture
Grapes come from Monforte d’Alba from an East facing vineyard planted at around 350m above sea level. Helvetian soils are common here and made up of sand, clay and calcareous marl. The average age of the vines in 20 years old with harvest usually happening around early October.
Winemaking
Traditional method of long maceration: natural fermentation without added yeasts for 40 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 6 months in stainless steel tanks, followed by 30 months in large capacity Slavonian oak casks (25-35 hl) and a successive refinement in the bottle
Taste
Deep but bright, it has an intense, but somewhat ethereal bouquet, a little sweet but bitter bite of liquorice, blooming roses and violet and a warm and spicy. Tannins are full and ripe but kept in check by the acidity. Complex and lengthy, yet fresh and approachable.
Food Pairing
Great with meat, game and mature cheeses age which are so typical of Piedmont but it also goes very well with all the rich dishes.
