This is one of the top English wines around at the moment. It’s been described as one of the best UK sparkling wines and is ‘world class’ by Dr Jamie Goode along with winning several gold awards at Wine GB and the IWSC. It’s pure, driven and racy whilst being weighty and complex. A great Champagne alternative.
Hampshire, England, UK.
Wild yeast fermentation, low sulphur- 71 mg/l, vegan/veggie.
After 8 years making over 120 different English sparkling wines in Hampshire, Black Chalk is the personal project of award winning winemaker Jacob Leadley and his family. This relative newcomer – the debut 2015 vintage was only released in 2018 – has rapidly established itself among the firmament of English sparkling wine.
Jacob and fellow winemaker Zoë Driver are overseeing the creation of a new winery in the heart of Hampshire’s Test Valley, surrounded by a collection of exceptional vineyards. Black Chalk is the epitome of an English “récoltant-manipulant”, the superior craftsmanship evident in the wines indelibly connected to their intuitive stewardship of the stunning chalk-rich landscape. Quality without compromise; creating wines that really showcase what Hampshire can do so well.
Sourced from top growers in Hampshire, all vines are planted on shallow chalk soils. Climate is challenging and unpredictable.
45% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Meunier, 23% Pinot Noir. Hand harvested and brought to the winery 3-day cold maceration. Wild ferment, with maceration for 23 days. Six months oak ageing in third use barrels.
This wine has real purity of fruit, a delicate weight from the Pinot Meunier and beautiful floral aromas from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fruit, balance, weight, and freshness, all showcase the best of what Hampshire can offer.
Fantastic as an aperitif or with canapes but also works well with crab and shellfish, particular those in a creamy sauce.
