On the 31st of July 1970, a 300-year-old Royal Naval tradition ended, when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the British Royal Navy; a day to be forever remembered as Black Tot Day. Black Tot Rum was born as an ode to the orginial navy tot. Born from century-old naval traditions, this rum is created for the palate of today, for the here, for the now- a rum to be forever remembered. It follows two previous releases, Black Tot Last Consignment which was launched in 2010 and is a blend of rum made up of the very last remaining stocks of Royal Navy rum that had been discovered in naval warehouses. This historic rum had sat dormant for over 30 years. Following this, was Black Tot Rare Old 40 Years Demerara Rum. This is one of the oldest examples of Demerara Rum in the world today, distilled in 1975.
Production/ make-up
Black Tot Finest Caribbean balances the fruity, honeyed notes of Barbadian rum, the full-bodied elements of Guyanese rum and the intense, funkiness of Jamaican rum, while allowing each of these individual styles to shine.
35% is 5 year old pot and column still Barbados rum, 40% is 3-5 year old pot and column still Guyana rum, 20% is unaged pot and column still Guyana rum and 5% is 3 year old pot still Jamaican rum. All the rums come from molasses and are aged in 200 litre Ex-bourbon white American oak casks. All rums are aged tropically in their country of origin however, the rum is blended and bottled in Scotland. There’s no added sugar and it’s un-chill filtered.
Taste
Rounded and rich, with butter toffee, banana cream and caramel to start. Gentle cinnamon and allspice build, with more fruit – baked apples, pineapple cubes and dried mango – joined by coffee, bittersweet dark chocolate and a grind of black pepper.
Suggested Serve
A great sipping rum but also fantastic for cocktails. Try is a daiquiri or in an old fashioned for a twist.
