Porto Cálem has achieved the status of a universal brand, with an extensive offering in all Port wine categories but above all Tawny. It is in the Arnozelo Wine Estate that Porto Cálem wines are born.
Situated on the south bank of the Douro River, this wine estate has an area of 300 hectares, 100 of which occupied by the best vineyards of the Douro Demarcated Region, classified with the letter “A”. The rows of vines are traditionally planted across the slope in horizontal terraces. More recently vines have been planted up the slope (called “vinha ao alto”, meaning vertically planted) on mainly Schistous-sandstone (greywacke) at an elevation of 600m
Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz in equal parts. Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation. This takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature (between 28-30°C) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine.
LBV’s are high quality wines made from one exceptional year, bottled 4 to 6 years after harvest. They are ready to drink and don’t require further ageing, almost a baby vintage port!
Dense and deep red in colour. Exuberant in the aroma, enriched by the red fruit jam, blackcurrant and light cocoa notes. Voluminous in mouth, with round and safe tannins, highlighted by the incredible elegance and right freshness. Long and harmonious finish.
