“Wine is an art. If you know how to listen, it speaks to you, it lets you know when it needs racking and rest. It’s just like a living creature that we have to understand, tend to and care for.” So said Emilio Moro, founder of the estate. Three generations later this belief is still upheld by José and Javier Moro. Based in the world famous village of Pesquera de Duero in the heart of Ribera del Duero the brothers believe that their wine has a life of its own and with each vintage a part of them is immortalized in it. “It evokes the land where it comes from”. Eschewing traditional notions of classification like crianza and reserva, the family were eager create wines with personality and individuality. Expressions true to their vineyards and their family’s heritage. Creating reds from their cherished Tinto Fino, a prized clone of Tempranillo, and more recently crafting Godello wines from Bierzo – vibrant whites that are as exciting and lively as their labels suggest. They have been making wines since 1938 and the label bears a photo of Emilio Moro harvesting with his father in the La Rendeja vineyard (1938).
Viticulture
This wine, bearing the name of its creator, is the matriarch of the winery. Since the 1998 harvest the winery has produced this wine from some of the oldest vines in the vineyards, which was previously used forthe Crianzas and Reservas. Grapes are from vineyards that are between 15 and 25 years old from a variety of three types of soils found in Ribera del Duero.
Winemaking
100% Tempranillo. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel deposits at controlled temperatures, with subsequent ageing in French and American oak barrels.
Taste
Balanced and elegant, the low yields bring out the best in this variety without losing the essence of the Tempranillo variety. It presents perfectly integrated aromas of new barrels and profiles of ripe fruit and spices with sweet tannins and a long and persistent aftertaste. A wine with power and structure that sits in harmony with a balanced acidity and finesse.
Food Pairing
It’s incredibly versatile and great for tapas. For a classic pairing, try it with your next roast lamb, it’s perfect!
