MORE INFORMATION
Producer
Made by Julien Dugas, one half of the winemaking duo in charge of Domaine Boutinot Rhone, based in the Southern Rhone valley. Julian’s career started back in 1997 when he gained his qualifications in oenology and viticulture. He has since gone on to make wine across many of the Cru sites of Rhone, including Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Chateauneuf-du-Pape as well as further afield in South Africa. He is now based in Cairanne, one the Southern Rhone Crus, where he has a hands on approach to winemaking.
Viticulture
The cru of Cairanne lies in the heart of the Southern Rhône valley, north east of Orange. Fully ripe Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre grapes are hand picked from old bush vines on selected hillside slopes within Cairanne. The vineyards have the classic argilo-calcaire soil of limestone pebbles over clay and the vines are harvested by hand. Organic practices are used although the sites are not certified.
Winemaking
Vinified traditionally with only the natural yeasts present on the grapes, followed by a long cuvaison period with gentle remontage and manual pigeage. The wine is matured for 2 years in French old oak barrels and demi-muids to develop great concentration, complexity and finesse.
Taste
Rich, intense and packed with dark red fruits. With morello cherry and a touch of sweet spice on the nose, ripe berry, liquorice, chocolate, summer pudding and a hint of cinnamon spice on the palate, this wine is full flavoured and smooth with supple tannins.
Food Pairing
Absolutely perfect with herby lamb dishes, but would be superb with most grilled meats and roasted vegetables.
