With ‘Mille 1’ translating to 1001 and Italy being 1001km top to tip, this is a fantastic wine with bags of character to represent the incredible culinarily journey you can take across Italy. The label is great too- it depicts an illustrated Fiat 500, the famed car of Italy with its number plate reading REBO a.k.a a key native grape in the blend.

MORE INFORMATION
Producer
Azienda Agricola Pratello is located in a beautiful setting near Padenghe Sul Garda at the south-west corner of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The entire estate comprises 120 hectares of land including natural woodland as well as 70 hectares of vineyards. Their winery is located at the heart of the medieval village of Pratello and completely underground providing the ideal setting for all parts of winemaking. The estate also produces extra virgin olive oil as well as having its own vegetable garden and an orchard.
Tradition and innovation are part of the key philosophy for Pratello. They choose to work with traditional and native varieties, such as Manzoni Bianco Rebo and Groppello, in a way that respects the nature surrounding them. However, they look to innovate by bringing these varieties to the forefront with modern vineyard management and vinification techniques.
Viticulture
Pratello has been certified organic since 2004 and has been working to enhance its sustainable environmental practices even further over the past few years. They have been working to ensure their vineyards and winery are respectful of the local ecosystems and are aiming to work holistically with nature. They’ve made steps to stop using copper sulphite in vineyard treatments (even though it is perfectly legal), reduce the level of sulphites in their produce and encourage biodiversity with new plantings as well as switch to renewable energy sources.
Grapes for Mille 1 come from the South-Western hills around Garda Lake- an amphitheater of vineyards on morainic soil that were formed by the expansion and retraction of glaciers thousands of years ago during the last Ice Age. It is a very sunny and constantly breezy area, which helps guarantees healthy vines and optimal ripening without mildew or disease.
Winemaking
A blend of Corvina, Rebo and Merlot. A portion of the grapes are left to dry in boxes for the “appassimento” process, a winemaking technique that is traditional to this region. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel, followed by six months of ageing in 500L French oak barrels. Pratello are conscious of sulphite additions and choose to flush the bottles with nitrogen to reduce oxygen present at bottling keeping SO2 to a minimum.
Taste
Vibrant garnet in colour and full of bright scents of wildflowers, ripe currants and blackberries and warm spices. At first taste, it’s full bodied but lively and incredibly more-ish. Savoury undertones carry into notes of red berries with a freshness almost like a seaside breeze on the finish, leaving a silky softness behind.
Food Pairing
Great with an array of foods and occasions- enjoy with a picnic of cheeses and charcuterie, a weeknight dinner with family or to a weekend barbecue with friends. Mille1 is a wine you can enjoy and share anytime.
