MORE INFORMATION
Producer
Bodegas Muga is a family business founded by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño in 1932, located in the historic Barrio de La Estación (Station Quarter) of Haro. With an area of around 25,000 square metres, it is home to both the most traditional winemaking methods and the latest cutting-edge techniques.
Over the years, they’ve become known as one of Rioja’s premium producers. They strive to use the finest materials and whilst remaining open to new techniques that provide greater quality without losing authenticity. This has meant that they are the only cellar in Spain with a master cooper and three in-house barrel-makers.
Viticulture
Grapes come from mainly calcareous clay in the Valle del Oja district and ferrous-clay in the Alto Najerilla.
Winemaking
A blend of Viura, Garnacha blanca and Malvasía de Rioja. Grapes are manually harvested, destemmed and undergo a gentle skin maceration. Fermentation is done in oak vats of various sizes and French Nevers oak casks with a very light toast. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete it remains in the casks for 4 months, with twice-weekly lees stirring during the first months and once per day in the final month, in order to keep the fine lees in contact with the wine, protecting it from oxygen and providing a smooth mouth-feel and complexity.
Taste
A complex wine with aniseed and lemon, a touch of white blossom and vanilla. The crisp acidity keeps the balance in check and adds to the long finish. Plenty of citrus and floral notes, together with stone fruit.
Food Pairing
Great for grilled fish, rice dishes and roast poultry. Also ideal for enjoying by the glass with tapas on a sunny day!
