MORE INFORMATION
Producer
Often referred to as the Grand Cru of the Midi (South of France), the Mas de Daumas Gassac top-tier wines have reached international cult status. Located in the majestic Gassac Valley, the Guibert family came across a wonderful patch of land with its own unique micro-climate and rare red-coloured glacial soil similar to those found in the Grand Crus of Burgundy. The land is also surrounded by woodland which scents the grapes with garrigue notes. Essentially, this plot of land was something exceptional. Aime Guibert, along with his wife Veronique, purchased the property and started planted vines in the 1970s. They wanted to find rare and unusual varieties so sought out varieties from across the globe. They also farmed naturally, never wanting to use chemicals, to show respect for the incredible land- they were the very first estate in the Languedoc to adopt full organic farming.
Today, they have become recognised as one the premium producers in the Languedoc yet still remain true to their philosophies set out some 40 years ago. They make a range of wines, from top class complex blends, capable of ageing for many years, to their delightful easy going blends that showcase a wonderful purity.
Viticulture
One of the things that separates Gassac is the exceptional terroir. Their vines growing on a deep, well-drained soil formed by glacial deposits and the upper Gassac valley benefits from a cool microclimate that allows a longer growing season. Their vineyards have been created in small plots or clearings surrounded by forest and garrigue meaning the grapes soak up the fragrances of the surrounding plant life of laurel, thyme, rosemary, lavender, arbutus, fennel, wild mint and lentisque. Daumas Gassac embraces an organic culture, eschewing chemical fertilizers, using only natural dung compost as well as tree and straw cuttings. Finally, their yields are naturally low (35hl/ha), allowing the wine to express the terroir more than the grape variety.
Winemaking
A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan. Vinified in stainless steel at cold temperature, bled after 10-12 hours maceration of all grape varieties. Minimal intervention winemaking is practiced.
Taste
Attractive, intense with hints of strawberry, full and round with touches of crushed red fruit, a little herbaceousness but very clean and pure on the finish. It’s got it all!
Food Pairing
Try with avocado with prawns, baked lemon chicken or grilled tuna. In all honesty though, it really doesn’t need food to shine, it’s great on it’s own!
