MORE INFORMATION
Producer
Ana Rola was born and bred in the Douro and knew from an early age that she wanted to be a winemaker in her home land, the Douro Valley. Through growing up in the region, she has unbeatable terroir knowledge and a sense of originality which really helps her overcome the challenges in creating wines that stands out from the crowd.
The estate where Ana makes her wines, Quinta de Remostias, dates back to the 18th century and is located in Peso da Régua, right in the centre of Douro Valley. In 2014, Ana decided to leave her post as head wine maker at a large prestigious Douro winery to go it alone. She explains, “after so many years doing what I love for others, I think it gets to a point that we think ‘why not do it for myself.’” For Ana, it’s about making wines “that really tell you where they came from. Wine from specific vineyards with minimal intervention. Wines that are true & honest. We believe in what we do!’” & we do too!
Viticulture
Grapes come from 50+ year old vines traditional in Douro, a World Heritage Site. Quinta de Remostias has 8 hectares of vines that are planted on schistose soil slopes, facing south and west.
Winemaking
A blend including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz & Tinto Cão. Grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel for around 7-10 day before malolactic fermentation takes place. 30% of the wine is then carefully aged for 9 -12 months in barrel.
Taste
Very concentrated and intense on the nose but somewhat fresh too. The palate reveals plenty of lush red fruit and a little dark fruit, spice and delicate floral tones coming from the Touriga Nacional. It’s backed up by notable tannins, a great, complex, full structure and a long persistent finish whilst being balanced by a mark of freshness. It’s incredibly elegant and a wine full of layers.
Food Pairing
A wine that loves food, it matches well with spicy sausages, BBQ’s, red meats & vegetable casseroles.
