75-year-old, once abandoned, vines restored to life and farmed Organically and Biodynamically. Only horses are used in the vineyards. This white Rioja spends 2 months on its grape skins post fermentation so could be classed as an “orange wine”, though it is gently filtered for clarity. It is made by a lady called Melanie Hickman who is originally from Hawaii!
The extended skin contact makes a rich, phenolic, deep orange coloured wine with a powerful, mouth coating flavour of tropical fruit, vanilla and toast. Only 2,300 bottles made per year. Hapa was the name of the wine makers dog who unfortunately didn’t make the journey of their emigration from Hawaii to Rioja. A truly unique and extremely high-quality wine.
