Lugana is wonderful hidden gem from northern Italy that perfectly balances richness and freshness. It’s bold in fruit character, with a gentle creamy body but a clean, minerally, moreish finish.

Producer
Based in between the Provinces of Brescia and Verona, in the hamlet of Roveglia near Pozzolengo Tenuta Roveglia is a family run winery headed up by three sisters, Sara, Vanessa and Babettli.
The origins of the estate date back to 1404, when the Roveglio family purchased lands and farmhouses from the monastery of San Salvatore in Brescia (today Santa Giulia in Brescia). That was how the name came about, but their adventure in wine began at the end of the nineteenth century, when their great-grandfather, Federico Zweifel, left the Canton of Glarus in the heart of Switzerland, where he was born, in order to find better working conditions in Italy. He settled in Lake Garda, a region he fell in love with and soon realised it’s potential for cultivating vines.
Fredrico began buying and transforming land in to vineyards whilst his son starting making wine for family and friends. It was in the 1980s that things really took off for Tenuta Roveglia as the sister’s father, Giovanni Felice Azzone, took over. Being a scientist and Professor of General Pathology at the University of Padua, he brought a passion for research and technological advancements to the winery.
Today, long term collaborator, Paolo Fabiani, is the director of the estate and has helped revise its production methods, introduce new protocols and bring in more modern vinification systems.
This distinctive combination of tradition and innovation, of love for the land and scientific research, has led to Tenuta Roveglia transforming itself over the years into a highly attractive example of a modern winery that is rooted in tradition. It is this long history, made up of passion, dedication and a shared dream, that now gives rise to the wines of Tenuta Roveglia.
Viticulture
They have around 105 hectares under vine, located to the south of Lake Garda, at an altitude of 100 metres above sea level. The land here is mostly flat with a mix of mainly clay and some limestone soils, rich in mineral salts. Harvest is done by hand towards the end of September. Around 95% of theur grapes come fromt heir own vineyards.
Winemaking
100% Turbiana (Verdicchio). Grapes are gently pressed with a maximum of 60% of free-run juice. Fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks and the wine spends 4-5 months in tank before being bottled. It spends a further 2-3 months in the bottle before being released.
Taste
A lovely, rounded wine with a clean fresh finish. Notes of ripe, bright stone fruit and soft orchard fruits, blossom, lemon drop and a hint of vanilla pod. It’s fuller in body and a touch of creaminess but refined and elegant with a lengthy, mineral driven finish.
Food Pairing
A really versatile wine, it’ll pair well with a range of fish, poultry and creamy dishes. Also fantastic as an aperitif or as a cheeseboard accompaniment.
