2017
Palmento Bianco wine is a field blend of organically grown, indigenous grapes from the north face of Mt Etna, Sicily. The grapes were hand harvested from different old bush vine vineyards over several days during the month of September.
The Catarratto (50% of the blend) was whole bunch pressed immediately and fermented in stainless steel. So too were the mixed cassettes of Minnella Bianco, Carricante and Insolia (approximately 10% of the final blend).
The Grecanico Dorato (40%) was macerated on skins for 8 days and then pressed and blended with the other fermenting musts. Alcoholic fermentation was spontaneous and without temperature control. The finished wine underwent malolactic fermentation and remained on light lees for 10 months before it was bottled without fining or filtration.
Golden in colour reflecting the period of maceration on the skins of the Grecanico, this wine has attractive white peach and grapefruit aromas and flavours. The palate is fresh and flavoursome with lively acidity and distinct mineral notes from the volcanic soils.
2016
A field blend of indigenous grapes from Mt Etna, principally Catarratto (50%) and Grecanico Dorato (40%). The remaining 10% is a mix of Minnella Bianco, Carricante, Insolia and Uva Francese.
The white is a field blend, mainly Grecanico and Carricante. The vineyards range from 760 m – 1000 metres in altitude, are terraced and are farmed organically by hand. The soils are black, decomposed lava (volcanic), except around Linguaglossa, where they are bright red and full of iron. The mineral content is very high giving the wines a noticeable sapidity. Wines are made with minimal intervention, natural yeasts, no additives, no fining or filtering and little or no SO2.
Mid lemon in colour, this wine has appealing citrus aromas, coupled with an underlying minerality. The palate is flavoursome, with a fresh acidity and an attractive sapidity.
Anna Martens and Eric Narioo started making wine together on Mount Etna, Sicily in 2008.They created “Vino di Anna” in 2010. They now own several hectares of old vine Nerello Mascalese, which they farm organically. They purchased an old winery and Palmento in 2010 which they have restored. Recently they have extended the winery to bury a series of Georgian qvevri for vinification and maturation.
